Lions Municipal Golf Course, also known as "Muny," has been a stalwart in Austin's golfing community since its opening in 1924. Initially a nine-hole course, it expanded to 18 holes and was the first public golf course in the city. Known for its historical significance, Lions Municipal has hosted legendary golfers such as Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson. It holds the distinction of being one of the earliest Southern courses to desegregate.
The course continues to maintain high standards, offering a challenging yet accessible environment for players. Reservations for tee times can be made in person at the pro shop or by phone starting at 7 am. Online bookings open at 9 am, with specific guidelines for weekdays and weekends.
The course features practice facilities, including a driving range (for irons only) and putting greens. Golf cart rentals are available alongside variable pricing for range balls. Note that Lions Municipal closes periodically for maintenance and overseeding to ensure optimal playing conditions year-round.
Also on-site is Cisco’s Muny Cafe providing refreshments and bites after a round of golf. The rich history coupled with well-maintained amenities makes Lions Municipal Golf Course an enduring favorite among local golf enthusiasts.
