The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals, located in Florence/Muscle Shoals, Alabama, features two distinguished 18-hole championship courses that offer unique challenges and scenic beauty. Positioned between the Wheeler and Wilson dams on the Tennessee River, these courses are renowned for their design and playability.
The Fighting Joe course, noted for being the first on the Trail to exceed 8,000 yards (measuring 8,092 yards from the black tees), caters particularly to long-hitters while providing an enjoyable experience for all skill levels from various tee boxes. Recognized by Travel + Leisure Golf as one of the top new courses in 2004, Fighting Joe is characterized by its wide fairways and well-maintained bent grass greens.
On the other hand, the Schoolmaster course demands precision with its narrower fairways and challenging approaches. Named after President Woodrow Wilson, this nearly 8,000-yard course sits high above Wilson Lake and is known for its picturesque views, particularly at the 18th hole overlooking the river.
The Shoals also hosts the Couples Championship each September, limited to 56 teams. Both courses offer a blend of natural beauty and technical challenge suitable for golfers looking to test their skills amidst stunning landscapes.
